FRED FOREST

LOOKING FORWARD TO THE EVOLUTION OF ART IN THE THIRD MILLENIUM

SATURDAY 23 OCTOBER 2004 5:00 PM

Artcurial 7 Rond Point des Champs-Elysées 75008 Paris
(open to the public)

Fred Forest will present his book "De l'art vidéo au Net Art" l'Harmattan
(“From Video Art to Net Art”)

-------------------------------------------------------
It is interesting that an artist should be calling art into question at the very moment that the International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) is taking place in Paris. Clearly, any notion of progress has now been banished from art; however, it remains that art is organically tied to the science and knowledge of its time, to its technology, social environment, ideologies, and fads. In spite of the fact that futurologists have been wrong most of the time, unless they happen to be named Leonardo or Jules Verne (both true artists), there nevertheless exists at present time good reason to believe that tomorrow’s art (if there still is such a thing by that name?) will different. Outside the art market, in research institutes and universities, the question of art’s future has been subject to ongoing reflection and experimentation since the decade of the sixties. It is for this reason that Fred Forest proposes that the notion of contemporary art itself be replaced by the more pertinent concept of an “art of the present” that transcends the esthetic values manipulated and imposed by the market.

PIERRE RESTANY ONE YEAR ALREADY !

Dear Fred Forest,

I was touched, to receive your e-mail of 2 May last night, on my return from a brief absence, and to learn of your plans to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Pierre Restany, at a ceremony at the cemetery of Montparnasse tomorrow morning.

May this ‘livre d’or’, in honour of our late, and much lamented, friend, Pierre, serve as an inspiration to all those wanderers of the spirit who visit its pages, so that it may metamorphose, through his example, and their presence, into a ‘Zone of Immaterial Sensibility’!

With warmest regards,

Henry Meyric Hughes, International President, The International Association of Art Critics (AICA).
