FRED FOREST, ONLINE “STATIONS OF THE CROSS”:
AN EXPERIMENT IN DIRECT DEMOCRACY
ARTISTIC ACTION/PERSONAL EXHIBITION

GALLERY CHRISTIAN DEPARDIEU NICE

9th September through 28th October 2005, Galerie Christian
Depardieu, 64 BD Risso BP 4169 06303 Nice France

In the pure tradition of sociological art, the interdisciplinary communication artist Fred Forest will be leading a frontal assault on those who currently hold the reins of power in the French city of Nice. This city’s mayor, a right-wing extremist from the National Front, has become a lightening rod for criticism on account of his authoritarian and arbitrary style of government and his
questionable cultural policies. For example, he has pushed for the creation of a new Festival of Military Music even though the Nice Jazz Festival, known worldwide, is falling into ruin because of inadequate funding; and “Art Junction,” a celebration of contemporary art, had to suspend operations
after its funding was eliminated… As usual, Fred Forest’s weapons of choice will be his derisive sense of humor, penchant for unexpected ironic twists, and systematic use of a wide range of subversive tactics. He cordially invites you
to join him in creating interactive “Stations of the Cross” using images culled at random from the depths of the Internet. Each station will symbolize a different burden born by the citizens of Nice, whose fair and legendary city has
fallen into a downward spiral of insecurity and a declining quality of life and has been governed by a scandal-ridden administration no different today than yesterday.

Fred Forest is professor emeritus at the University of Nice
